TECHNOLOGY PERSPECTIVES:
ADDING GENERIC APPLICATION SERVERS
by Alexey Kazakov, Senior Software Engineer for the Exadel Studio Line, Exadel, Inc.
Using WTP and other plug-ins you can deploy your Web application project to a lot of different application servers right "out of the box" with no special work required. But, what do you do if you need to use another application server that is not on the list?
You might, for example, wish to deploy your projects to JRun 4. WTP, as initially installed in earlier WTP versions, didn’t support this server but it does allow us to use the Generic Server Framework to create a plug-in which will support any server. Generic Server is a special server and runtime implementation of the base server tooling that can adjust its behavior based on a server type definition file. Server type definition files are XML-based meta-information files that are included in using the org.eclipse.jst.server.generic.core.serverdefinition extension point. In this article, we will show you how to use this capability by walking you through the steps for creating a simple plug-in that will add a new application server type to your Eclipse environment using the Generic Server Framework.... EXADEL STUDIO PRO 3.0 REVIEWED IN SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT JOURNAL
Software Development, November 2005
Exadel Studio Pro was recently reviewed in the Software Development column, "New and Noteworthy: Fit To Be Tried". Exadel Studio is showcased in the "Down with Drudgery" section of the column.
"Exadel Studio Pro 3.0 (built atop Eclipse 3.1) now offers a WYSIWYG JSP designer that boasts a goodly library of JSP and Struts tags and components. Studio Pro lets you do more than just visually lay out what the user sees, however; its visual flow editor relieves the pain of specifying how the user gets from Form A to Catalog B. The components of your JSF or Struts app are all editable with visual tools or properties dialogs. Plus, you can always drop down to the source; some edit tools let you display and round-trip edit source and visual layout simultaneously. Hibernate mapping tools ease the task of object-relational mapping." [Reviewed by writer Rick Wayne]

SIERRA CLUB GROWS OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION
By Jennifer Mears, Network World, October 31, 2005
Jennifer Mears, a Network World's reporter, talked to Sierra Club’s lead programmer analyst, Mark Maslow, about his latest project: redesigning the reservation application on the Sierra Club's Web site. The development team settled on using a Java-based application development process based on open source products. The team decided to use Struts as a Web application framework, Hibernate for object/relational mapping, Eclipse as the development environment, and the Tomcat application server for deployment.
In the article, Mark Maslow talks about the key role of Exadel Studio and Exadel Services in enabling Sierra Club’s development team to complete the project in just three months."It was very helpful in organizing the project... As a beginner, a little bit of prompting [from Exadel Studio] to put the right parameters in the right places was a big help. Certainly I could have gotten to the same place, but it would have taken me a lot longer to get there, that's for sure.” [Quote from article]
