TECHNOLOGY PERSPECTIVES:

HIBERNATE MAPPING PATTERNS FOR LEGACY DATABASES: PART I
by Alex Antonov, Software Architect, Exadel, Inc.

Six months ago, we started the Exadel blog as another means to share our knowledge and experience with you. So far, 20,000 people have visited our blog, left comments, and asked questions. We are now tapping into our in-house experiences with Hibernate to create a series of blog articles about Hibernate. In the first of a series of such articles, Exadel's Software Architect, Alex Antonov, discusses some useful patterns for mapping to legacy databases with Hibernate.

In the first article of the series, Alex Antonov states, "Things would be much simpler if our object/relational mapping projects could start completely from scratch on the relational database end, but this not often the case. To help with these cases of mapping to legacy databases, I have collected together some useful patterns based on Hibernate 3.0. Here are two patterns to start with…"[Quoted from the article]

NEW WHITE PAPER RELEASED - THE OPEN SOURCE SIREN SONG

"Open source software is reliable, secure, scalable and well suited for all types of enterprise business requirements when it has been correctly developed and deployed. The problem is that actually using open source to develop mission critical business solutions is neither as simple nor as straightforward as open source vendors would have you believe. IT professionals are confused about where to go for information and good quality solutions. Consequently IT managers looking to reduce their development costs by choosing to use open source often rush into projects without careful planning or a real understanding of the pitfalls of using open source." [Quoted from the white paper]

In this paper, partner Rikki Kirzner explores the challenges of navigating the rocky shoals of open source development and offers guidance on how companies can leverage leading technologies to provide more reliable and cost-effective open source development.

EXADEL'S CEO, FIMA KATZ, ABOUT DEVELOPMENT BOOST

"Since Exadel announced our Development Boost service a few months ago, I've been asked a lot about it. Development Boost is a package of services designed to help development teams jump-start their critical software projects by providing intensive onsite interactive assistance. We began offering this service based on multiple requests from our client base. In working with open source technologies, we saw many companies floundering as they tried to come to grips with open source, looking for answers that vendors could not provide.

Our Development Boost and related services help companies integrate open source into their current architecture and understand the financial, strategic, and technical advantages of open source. With this assistance, development teams can navigate through multiple technological choices to select the "best-of-the-breed" combination most applicable to a given project, define reasonable milestones for meeting project deadlines, and create a flexible infrastructure that can be reused for future projects.

If your team is looking to get a jump-start on integrating open source into your environment, please contact us. We would be happy to provide references from one of the many clients who have achieved positive experiences and quantifiable results from their experience."

IN THE NEWS:

TV SHOPPING NETWORK HSN SHOPS EXADEL FOR OPEN SOURCE SERVICES, TOOLS AND TRAINING
September 26, 2005

On September 26, 2005, Exadel, Inc. and the TV shopping network, HSN, a global multi-channel retailer and subsidiary of IAC/InterActiveCorp (NASDAQ: IACI) announced that HSN has chosen Exadel's Open Source Tools, Development Boost Services and customized training to extend its application infrastructure capabilities and to augment its in-house open source and Java expertise.

Tasked with creating an application platform that could effectively scale to support future application development efforts, HSN evaluated dozens of commercial and open source solution providers before deciding to build the framework in-house with open source and Java-based technologies. The primary challenge of this visionary IT initiative was determining how HSN could design and deploy a reliable, high-performance software infrastructure with a team of in-house programmers, developers and architects who were unfamiliar with the complex landscape of open source tools and technologies. EXADEL A NATURAL CHOICE FOR SIERRA CLUB
October 11, 2005

Exadel, Inc. and Sierra Club, the nation's oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization, announced that Sierra Club has selected Exadel's Web development toolset and Development Boost services. Tapping Exadel's expertise in Java and open source development and planning, Sierra Club has already deployed a Web-based external-facing custom application and plans to deploy a separate Web application internally.

Sierra Club recently tasked its IT department with overhauling the web-based reservation system for "Sierra Club Outings," a 100-year old program. Tied to its membership database of over 3 million members, the online reservation system had grown increasingly complex, as additional business processes and requirements, from pricing to membership data, were added to the application. Enhancing the system required that the team evaluate the most robust and flexible tools on the market.

The development team ultimately selected Exadel Studio Pro 3.0 and Exadel Professional Services to roll-out the new and improved application, taking the project from start to finish in less than three months. Read more
