TECHNOLOGY PERSPECTIVES:

A JSF KICKSTART APPLICATION WITH FACELETS
by Sergey Smirnov, Principal Architect of Exadel Studio

Facelets is a view technology that works on top of the standard JavaServer Faces (JSF) framework. This technology significantly simplifies the way JSF components can be created and combined together. This article shows how a small JSF application can be created using Facelets.

Facelets provides many additional features that JSF developers are missing today. With Facelets, you can easily convert standard HTML tags into JSF components like in Tapestry and easily gather pages from templates in a Tiles-like manner. Additionally, you can use the latest JSF Expression Language (EL) syntax anywhere on the page, not just inside JSF tag attributes. With Facelets, you can also use a number of JSTL tags with JSF components.

CONTROLLING YOUR DIALOGS WITH DIALOG SETTINGS
by Denis Golovin, Technical Team Lead for the Exadel Studio line

It often happens that, after a dialog is shown, you suddenly need to look at something under it. You might decide to move it to a more convenient place on the screen, but, when you call the same action again, you have to move it all over again, because the dialog doesn't save its state (size and position on the screen).

But, don't worry. Within Eclipse, there is a utility class that helps solve this very problem.

NEW WHITE PAPER: EXADEL—EMBRACING THE NEW BUSINESS REALITY

Doing business today is often summed up with one phrase: "plan for change." Vendors scramble to woo clients with tales of how their software will better position them to deal with the moving target—modern business. What's often overlooked is that the software development industry itself is changing just as quickly as its client. We now live in a world where software projects are heterogeneous, incorporating a plurality of technologies, both proprietary and open source. The challenge with this new paradigm is that companies are forced to wrestle with the "who, what, where and whens" of how to integrate open source technologies with their mission critical applications, with little support and few documented use cases. Furthermore, the development process itself has changed... Read more

EXADEL STUDIO PRO 3.0 RECEIVES GREAT FEEDBACK FROM THE COMMUNITY

"I just installed the evaluation of the Pro version. I am quite oblivious to JSF, except for the basic concepts of managed beans and flows (from a 5 minute read of a quick-start and previous experience of Struts and Spring). I have to say, I am quite impressed! I had my first few forms and page flows up in no-time," said Wille Faler on www.theserverside.com.

"Exadel's tag library palette is what is going to put me over the edge to strongly recommend this tool for my four projects. Exadel is a great plug in, and coupled with the price it is a steal," says another developer, Tim P. from New Hampshire.

These are only two examples of what developers have to say about our new release. If you haven't tried Exadel Studio Pro 3.0 yet, click here to see what you are missing.

IN THE NEWS:

THE TOOLS MARKET IS CHANGING, BUT DEMAND FOR SUPPORT ISN’T
By John K. Waters, Application Development Trends, September 1, 2005

John K. Waters talks to Michael Gallagher, manager of architecture and strategy for ABN AMRO North America, about why and how this international bank with more than 3,800 offices in 60 countries has adopted open source.

"People in my position aren’t really interested in open source because it's the lowest cost software," Gallagher says, "but because support for it is much wider spread, and there is greater innovation potential. And that’s what we’re seeing in Eclipse, especially the way the commercial community has evolved around it...

What I like about companies like Exadel is that they acknowledge the way my company works. I don’t spend a lot of time out on SourceForge pulling things down and figuring out how best to add them into our online banking. We’re structured to start by talking to our bankers to figure out what their needs are, to then look in our tools suites and figure what we’ve already got to solve their problems, and finally to talk to vendors about what new offerings they have." OPEN SOURCE IS SERIOUS BUSINESS FOR EXADEL CUSTOMERS
By John K. Waters, Application Development Trends, August 9, 2005

Here's a statistic worthy of a doubletake: According to Exadel, every Fortune 1000 firm has downloaded its tools — at least to kick the tires.

"This says, of course, very good things about our technology," says Fima Katz, the company's founder and CEO, "but I think there is a larger and more important meaning, and that is that these companies are either using or considering open source." [Quoted from the article.]
