The open source Apache Jakarta Struts Framework provided the capability of building powerful robust Web applications based on the MVC (Model-View-Controller) design pattern, but needed a powerful development environment for developers to truly capitalize on the value of Struts. To fill this need, Exadel stepped forward with Struts Studio to provide a visually-oriented tool to radically simplify the task of Struts development by providing a powerful new Web Integrated Development Environment (WIDE) for Struts. Strut Studio 5.1 comes in 2 editions, a Standard Edition and a Professional Edition. The Standard Edition includes the core functionality of Struts Studio. The Standard Edition features Exadel's unique "Web Flow" visual editing technology for managing the overall application and its components, along with automatic updating of all of the various links between resources in a Struts project and many other features. The Professional Edition adds explicit GUI support for the exciting advances in Struts version 1.1 (Validation, Tiles, and multiple modules) and Exadel's own special Struts Verification Framework.

In 5.1, Exadel has added even more features to further raise Struts Studio's status as a must-have tool for Struts development. These improvements include full JSP previewing during the application design process, complete code prompting for JSP files, and complete code prompting for any XML file with a DTD.
