Top Questions

1.0    Is it possible to increase the performance of Eclipse after installing your product? My Eclipse now crawls.

By default, Eclipse allocates only 128 Mb of memory whatever physical memory you actually have installed. You can significantly increase performance if you allocate more memory. For example:

eclipse.exe -vmargs -Xmx512M

For more more information, please look in the release notes.

All Exadel products are tested to work under Windows and Linux platforms.

Downloading

3.0    Where can I download a copy of Exadel Studio?

Simply go to http://www.exadel.com/web/portal/download

Installation Issues

4.0    Do I need to have Tomcat installed to run Exadel Studio or Exadel Studio Pro?

No. Each of these products already comes bundled with Tomcat server. We bundle it together so that you don't need to download any additional software and can test your application in a Web browser right away.

If you want to use a different Tomcat installation, after installing, simply go to preferences and change the settings to point to another Tomcat installation.

Exadel products work with any serlvet container, not just Tomcat. For more information on deployment, please see the Deploying Your Application section.

4.1    What third-party plug-ins are installed with Exadel Studio?

Check the release notes for the most updated list.

4.2    If I don't see the Exadel Studio plug-ins installed in the Eclipse plug-ins folder, should I just copy them into this folder after installation is complete?

Definitely not! Exadel Studio is installed as an Eclipse extension. Exadel Studio's files are supposed to be under the Eclipse plug-ins folder. If it is, it will work incorrectly. Exadel Studio is installed into a separate application folder, the Exadel Studio home folder (for example, C:\ExadelStudio). The file that contains the reference to this Exadel Studio home folder is put into the Eclipse links folder. This reference file is the only file that is supposed to be within the Eclipse folder.

Troubleshooting, Problems, Configuration, Error Messages

7.0    Is it possible to increase the performance of Eclipse after installing your product? My Eclipse now crawls.

By default, Eclipse allocates only 128 Mb of memory whatever physical memory you actually have installed. You can significantly increase performance if you allocate more memory. For example:

eclipse.exe -vmargs -Xmx512M

For more more information, please look in the release notes.

7.1    How can I check that Exadel Studio is really installed, if I have installed Exadel Studio and can see no apparent difference after launching Eclipse?

Eclipse loads plug-ins on demand. To check that the Exadel Studio plugin is installed correctly, select Window->Open Perspective->Other... from the Eclipse menu bar. Then, select Exadel Studio Perspective from the list.

7.2    How can I add my own tag library to the Exadel Palette?

See Adding Tag Libraries in the Exadel Studio User Guide.

7.3    I see the Oracle ADF Faces component library tags in the Exadel Palette, but I can't seem to find the libraries for ADF. How do I use this component library with Exadel Studio?

See Adding Support for the Oracle ADF Components Library in the Exadel Studio User Guide.

7.4    After just installing the Exadel Studio plug-in I open Eclipse and don't see Exadel Studio. What should I do?

From the menu bar, select Window/Open Perspective.../Other... and then select Exadel Studio from the perspective list.

7.5    I have just installed Exadel Studio, but can see nothing that has changed under the Eclipse plug-ins folder. Do I have to copy some file or folder manually?

No. The Exadel Studio plug-ins should not be under the Eclipse plug-ins folder. Exadel Studio is registered under Eclipse using the links folder in the Eclipse home folder. (It's at the same level as the plug-ins folder.) The links folder contains a file with the name com.exadel.studio.link . This file points Eclipse to Exadel Studio.

7.6    I would like to temporarily remove the Exadel Studio plugin from Eclipse. Is the uninstall program the only one way to do so?

You can just move the org.eclipse.exadel.studio.link file from the Eclipse links folder to some safe place on the disk. To restore the plug-in, just copy this stashed file back under the Eclipse links folder.

7.7    What is the purpose of the struts-config.exadel file in Struts projects and the faces-config.lt4 file in JSF projects?

These files are just used to store the diagram layout for the configuration file. It's only used by Exadel Studio and has no effect on the operation of the application at run-time. You will need to share this file through your version control system (like CVS) if you want to share a diagram layout among team members.

7.8    I'm running Exadel Studio on Linux with Eclipse 3.0.1. I'm getting the following error: Could not launch internal Web Browser. Please set an external browser in Browser Preferences. The environment comes up in the bottom window with the Exadel Studio help tab selected. A red message is displayed An error has occurred when creating this view.

The problem is that under Eclipse 3.0.1 on Linux, the library libswt-mozilla-gtk-3063.so is only intended to support Mozilla 1.6 .

Here is a workaround:

  1. Install Mozilla 1.6 on your machine
  2. When launching Eclipse from the command line, add the java.library.path parameter (after -vmargs), for example:
    -Djava.library.path=/opt/mozilla_1_6/lib:/opt/mozilla_1_6/lib/component

7.9    When I compile a project with the built-in Ant script, I get the message "Unable to find a javac compiler; com.sun.tools.javac.Main is not on the classpath. Perhaps JAVA_HOME does not point to the JDK". How do I fix this?

From the menu bar, open Windows/Preferences/Ant/Runtime. Add the tools.jar file contained in the JDK's files to Ant's classpath.

7.10    I have registered the application with Tomcat. When I launch the application, I get this error org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP An error occurred at line: -1 in the jsp file: null ....

It most likely means that you have started Tomcat with a JRE and not a full JDK. (You may have decided to select Ignore when your Exadel product complained the first time you tried to launch Tomcat.) Tomcat needs a full JDK in order to compile JSP pages.

You can set the Java VM to point to a full JDK by going to Window/Preferences/Java/Installed JREs on the menu bar. Add the location of the full JDK and set it as the default. Then, restart Eclipse.
